About
This site is known by two names, kirkhemmen.com and claint.com. It doesn't matter how you get here, the functionality is identical. This site has evolved over the years from my personal website to a more encompassing place to interact with my friends and family. It is still a place that I'll use to dump both thoughts and musing (in the form of blog entries) as well as random files, videos, and other tidbits that I either want to share with the world, or just want to keep in one place so I don't lose them.
Site Usage
General Site Concepts
While I built this site and am the owner, kirkhemmen.com has grown, and there are now several "admins" who can contribute content as freely as I do. This is fun for me, for them, and for readers. When I refer to an "admin," I'm referring to someone who has a right to add content to this site.

It's easiest to think about this site as a collection of 2 distinct "things", blog entries and files. A file can be anything from a picture, to a video, to a Word document, to a downloadable game in .zip format. They all fall under the classification of a "file." A blog entry is... well, if you don't know what a blog entry is, join the 21st century already.

Blog entries and files can be organized into categories. The categories here are very simple. There is no hierarchy to them. In other words, all categories are at the same level. There are no sub-categories. Think of it like a file cabinet. You may hang several file folders (categories) in a file cabinet, but you don't hang file folders inside of other file folders.

It's a pretty simple idea, but understanding that there are essentially two types of objects, and that these objects can be placed into one or more categories will help you get the most from this site.

Viewing Content
The content on kirkhemmen.com can be viewed in one of three ways.
  • The home page.
The home page will list every blog entry that any admin has made. The blog entries are sorted so that the newest entry will appear first. At most, 5 blog entries will be visible per page. If more than 5 blog entries exist, there will be page links at the top and bottom of the blog entries that allow you to hop to other pages of results.

  • The browse page.
When you first go to the browse page, it will list all of the created categories, along with a description of and number of objects in that category. Clicking on a category name will take you to that category's index page, where you will get a preview of every object in the category. From there, you can click on an individual object to view it (either read the blog entry, or view/download the file). When you are viewing an object within a category, a category navigation bar at the top of the screen will allow you to continue to browse the category you're in by going forward or backward to the next or previous object. Alternatively, you can click on the category heading to return to that category's index page.

  • The search page.
The search page is a powerful way to find any content on kirkhemmen.com. The search page will give you a number of filters that you can use to narrow down the content you want to find. It's important to keep in mind that the more of these filters you fill in, the more restrictive your search becomes. In other words, filling in two search filters is like combining them with the word "AND", not the word "OR."

Once you have selected the search filters you want, you can click the search buttons and the results will display below. If there are too many results to fit on the page, page links will again become available so that you can see subsequent pages of search results. One other feature is that you can sort your search results by the column of your choice simply by clicking on that column heading.

If you see an object in your search results that you would like to have a closer look at, simply click on that object's row and you will be brought to the view page for that object. This view page looks just like the view page when browsing through a category's objects, except that it will not contain the category navigation bar.

Reading and Making Comments
Any time you are viewing an object, either on the home page, while browsing through a category, or after performing a search, you will be able to make comments about that object, or read other users' comments. Each object is displayed in its own box, and at the bottom of each box you'll see a little link that reads "comment", along with the current number of comments in parenthesis.
You can click on the word "comments" in this section to toggle the visibility of that object's comments. Click it once to expand the comments, click it again to contract them.

Existing comments from other users will be listed in reverse chronological order. Each comment is also accompanied by the name of the person who left the comment, and the time the comment was left. Note that comments made by admins will appear in a different color to help distinguish them from other users. Without this visual indicator, it's too easy for a non-admin to copy an admin's name soas to impersonate them.

Adding a comment of your own to an object is simple! Simply expand the object's comments area, and then click the link at the bottom of the comments area that says "Add a Comment!"
This will display a form where you can give your name (or internet handle) and add your comment. Note that each time you make a comment, you will have to identify the text in the image that appears. This image is called a "CAPTCHA" and is a method used to discourage automated bots/scripts from submitting data through web forms. In other words, the image is there to prevent the comments areas from being filled with spam and other garbage. It's just there to make sure that the person on the other end of the line (you) is actually a human! If you have difficulty reading the image, a link is provided for you to have the site generate a new image for your on-the-fly. Feel free to do this as many times as you need. Once you can read the captcha image, type the content into the box and submit your comment. Your comment will immediately be saved and be visible as the most recent comment for that object!
Work Mode
Work Mode is a mode that you can set to help protect yourself from inappropriate content that will undoubtedly find its way here. When admins add files or create blog entries, they have the option of flagging them as "NSFW" (Not Safe For Work). All Work Mode does is simply filter out any objects labeled NSFW from your view. That way you can still enjoy kirkhemmen.com at work or from Grandpa's house without having to worry about nudity or excessive adult language suddenly popping up on your screen. Keep in mind, however, that flagging content as NSFW is up to each admin, and some of us may have different ideas about what's safe for work.

To toggle your Work Mode setting On and Off, simply click the appropriate navigation item in the navigation bar. The default setting is On, and your current setting will always be visible on the right side of the title bar.
Terminology and Visual Indicators
Phrase/Indicator Meaning
Admin An admin is anyone on kirkhemmen.com who has permission to contribute content. I am the owner and an admin, but over time, friends of mine who are interested in contributing content will also be made admins.
Object Generic term referring to either a file or a blog entry (the two main components of kirkhemmen.com. Admins can add objects to kirkhemmen.com as their way of contributing content.
NSFW Not Safe For Work. If an object is "NSFW" it means that it will not be displayed to you if you have Work Mode on.
Dashed Outline This visual indicator means that the object being viewed is flagged as "admins only." You should only ever see this if you're an admin.
Bold Category Name A bold category name indicates that the category is an event. This usually means the content within it is constrained around a certain point in time. Other categories with non-bold names are more general categories.
Orange Background This visual indicator means that the object in question has been flagged as NSFW. You should only ever see this if you have Work Mode off.
Author Decoration This color is used to identify comments made by kirkhemmen.com admins. If a comment's author is not marked up in this way, it means that the comment was not made by a true admin (or that the admin wasn't logged in when they made the comment).
Technical
I built this site and tested it on a PC with FireFox 2.0+ and IE 7+. I can't promise that it will work or render correctly on any other platform. In fact, if you have IE6 or earlier, it probably won't. If you have a computer and a browser that were made in the last several years, you shouldn't have to worry about it. If you DO notice anything out of the ordinary with the display or functionality, and you're using a modern platform and browser, please let me know. I'll do my best to correct it, but I don't promise anything. I made this site for myself and my close friends and family, so I don't feel an overwhelming urge to make it viewable by the largest combination of platforms possible.

A couple other things you should note:
  • If you want Work Mode and some other features to work correctly, you will need to have cookies enabled. Don't cry about it, there's no security risk, that's just the way things are these days.
  • This site makes heavy use of AJAX, so you will need to have JavaScript enabled. If you're struggling to get around, the cause is probably that your browser's JavaScript interpreter doesn't have what it takes to run this site. If that's the case, I'm sorry, but you're out of luck. Again, if you have a browser made in the last several years, you should be just fine.
